Hair Colour Ideas & 7 Pro Tips on How to colour your Hair at Home

Dyeing your hair at home can be pretty daunting, but it can also be very rewarding. Colouring hair takes time, skill and dedication, which explains why salons can be so pricey. Fear not, your hands can be just as talented as that of a hairstylist. We’ve gathered up some hair colour ideas and 7 pro tips on how you can dye your hair at home, like a pro.

Before you do anything, you need to know which colour you’ll be choosing. We love a natural glam makeover, but we also love how a pop of colour accentuates your beauty. If you’re looking for a sign to colour your hair bright pink, this is it. Renew’s passion for pink comes in two gorgeous choices: Perfect Colour Passion Pink and Colour Play Kit Pink Tulip. They’re both fun, playful colours and designed to make you stand out on any and every occasion.

Step 1: Prep your station

You’re going to need a designated section in your house to work in. It can be your bathroom, your bedroom or wherever you feel most comfortable. If you want, lay some newspaper on the floor to ensure you catch any spills that (might) fall.

You will need:

  • Pre-lightening kit
  • 2 x boxes of Renew Colour Passion Pink or Colour Play Kit in Pink Tulip (depending on the length of your hair)
  • Stainproof bowl
  • Application brush
  • Gloves
  • Hair clips for sectioning
  • Petroleum jelly (trust us).

Step 2: Throw on some old clothes

There’s no point in wearing a shirt you bought yesterday, not unless you want to turn it into a tie-dye. Throw on some old clothes that you don’t mind getting messy with a drop of colour or two.

Step 3: Section your hair

Sectioning is the most important part when it comes to colouring your hair. Brush your hair out thoroughly to remove any knots and part your hair in the middle. Then divide it again on each side into 2, you should have a total of 4 sections of hair. Take your clips and hold each one in place and you’re ready to get started.

Step 4: Lighten with bleach

Patch test! Always read the back of the box for application and care instructions. Before you proceed to lightening your hair, patch test a strand to see if the product works. Once you’re happy with the results of the patch test, you’re ready to lighten.

If you already have naturally light hair, you can jump right through to step 5.

If your hair is slightly darker or not as light as you want it to be, you need to get it to a medium-blonde. Start at the ends and allow it to process, then touch up your roots. Place a bag over your head (this helps trap the heat to make the bleaching process faster) and set a timer.

Rinse and dry then advance to step 5.

Step 5: Apply colour generously

Your hair should be dry at this point in order for you to begin. Section your hair again as you did in step 3 and lather pink hair dye in. Be generous, you don’t want to miss any spots!

Step 6: Allow to process

You should allow the hair colour to process for at least 30 minutes. The colour needs time to absorb into the hair fibre. We know at this point you’re impatient and want to wash it off, but trust that the wait is so worth it.

Step 7: Wash, blow-dry & style

The time has come for you to make waves with the hottest hair colour. Wash your hair with colour-treated hair shampoo and condition with the conditioning treatment included in your Renew box. After blow-drying and styling to your taste, add a little shine serum for that extra touch.

Colouring your hair at home won’t be easy first time around, and that’s okay. Every expert was once a beginner. Remember to take your time and don’t rush. Read all instructions and perform a patch test just to be safe. It’s time to feel beautiful and confident with Renew’s range of vibrant and exciting hair colour ideas.
