Tips and tricks for sexy, bouncy curls

Tips and tricks for sexy, bouncy curls

There’s always something so sassy and alluring about a girl with curls in her hair. From models, who strut runways with that extra bounce in their locks, to celebs, who steal scenes with those voluminous waves… They’re enough to make every woman covet curly hair and learn the tricks of the trade. With this in mind, we’ve put together some of the easiest and most do-able tips and tricks to get the sexy, bouncy curls you’ve always fantasised about… With a curling iron or wand… Heat-styling is a great and convenient way to curl your hair. When prepping to heat-style your hair, remember to use a protective heat spray to avoid damage. Once you’ve done this, to make things easy, part your hair into sections you can manage, clipping each one as you go. Then pick up each section, comb through it and lightly spritz a light-hold hairspray to create volume. Clamp sections of hair at the ends and wrap around your curling iron or, alternatively, roll a section of hair around the barrel, from the roots to the ends, if using a wand. Start from the nape of your neck, working your way up. Hold hair in the iron or wand for about 10 to 20 seconds at a time. Continue to work in sections until you have completed curling all your hair. With a flat iron… Don’t own a wand or curling iron? No problem. A straightener or flat iron can do the trick just as easily! To achieve perfect curls, a narrow width flat iron is ideal. Once again part your hair into sections, gathering and...
Why I Love Anna Wintour

Why I Love Anna Wintour

When I was in high school, my biggest dream was to be the editor of Seventeen Magazine. I saved my pocket money every month to be able to buy the magazine, and then I poured over it for days – cutting out my favourite pictures to stick in my school diary. The magazine was always filled with inspiration and women to look up to. Then during my studies, one of my friends introduced me to The September Issue – a documentary about the 2007 September Issue of Vogue. I fell in love with the world of Vogue instantly. I loved everything about it: from Grace Coddington’s fiery red hair that matches her passion for shooting editorials, to seeing the detail that goes into every shoot and article. Watch the trailer Of course, the ultimate highlight of the documentary was seeing Vogue Editor, Anna Wintour, do her thing. I was in awe of her. She’s intelligent, hardworking and unapologetic about her vision for Vogue. She instantly became my female hero. If you read The Devil Wears Prada, which was written by Anna Wintour’s former assistant Lauren Weisberger, you probably know that she’s not the easiest person to please. ““If one comes across sometimes as being cold or brusque, it’s simply because I’m striving for the best.” – Anna Wintour But that’s what I like about her. She’s relentless in her pursuit of making Vogue the best fashion magazine of our time. “I don’t like people who’ll say yes to everything I might bring up. I want people who can argue, and disagree, and have a point of view that’s reflected...

In the spirit of Women’s Month, I would like to share my Female Hero with you.

Michelle Obama is, to me, a true representation of a strong, modern-day heroine. She not only holds her family together, with grace and poise, but she also stays true to herself in everyday life. I just love how self-assured she is and she has the best sense of humor. I don’t know many first ladies that would go on TV shows and sing in the car on camera. I love when she dances on the Ellen show. I love how relaxed she is in the public eye. I love how she proves that you really CAN have it all. She is a wife, mother, businesswoman and a lawyer. She is also the first lady of the United States of America, which is a huge job, in itself. I believe that she is a fundamental part of Barack Obama’s success, and she has been an incredibly inspirational First Lady. I think she is an amazing role model, not only for African American girls, but girls in general. Those arms are also something to envy 😉 She is such a great public speaker. When she speaks, everyone listens. She has such a great flow about her, and you really can see that she enjoys talking to people, whether it’s one-on-one or to thousands, from the podium. Have you seen her Karaoke episode with James Corden? I’ll share my favorite Michelle Obama quotes with you: “Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” “Success doesn’t count unless you earn it fair and square.” “We should always have 3 friends in our lives: one...
Sunset hair – is this the best ombre hair trend we’ve seen?

Sunset hair – is this the best ombre hair trend we’ve seen?

Colourful hair trends just keep popping up don’t they. It seems like everyone has gone a bit colour mad, sporting just about every colour in the rainbow. The look, once reserved for the misfits, punks, the brave and those looking to make a statement, is now dare I say it, mainstream. I haven’t caved yet but am leaning towards ombre hair involving berry shades like Renew Mulberry and Burgundy worked into my naturally dark hair. We’ve seen everything from tie dye hair and cherry bombre to mermaid hair. Yet sunset hair is simultaneously edgy and one of the most romantic statement hair trends I’ve seen. DIY Ombre Hair At Home It’s not just about red hair colour The Sunset hair trend involves creating ombre hair using all the shades of breathtaking tropical sunsets, or combining the shades in your own unique way. This means berry tones, coppers, blondes and yes, all manner of reds all fit in with the trend. Typically, the look starts dark at the roots, however I don’t think there are any rules. In whatever order you choose to apply the colours, the result is simply stunning. The trend originated sometime last year and while it started out as something fun to do with hair chalk or was simply added to hair lengths it has evolved into full blown vibrant coifs from root to ends. You only need to search Instagram to witness just how the sunset hair trend has snowballed. Even the celebs have embraced this addition to the colourful hair craze. Lily Allen’s Sunset hair transformation is one that saw much admiration from the...
Your guide to wedding hairstyles

Your guide to wedding hairstyles

Here is a short checklist to keep in mind when choosing a wedding hairstyle: Find a few hairstyles you like and try them out BEFORE the wedding, not the night before! It’s important to choose a style that is possible with your hair type and length. Find a hairstyle that suits your overall bridal look! If you are wearing flowers in your hair, maybe consider wearing your hair down in beachy waves. Find a hairstyle that compliments your dress. For example, a simple updo for a dress with plenty of beads and lace. Be realistic and be open minded to new hairstyles.     Buns, buns, buns This look screams chic, simple and lovely and who doesn’t want to be all of that on their wedding day? This hairstyle can be pulled off without too much hairspray and hot irons and you can glam it up with a beaded band. The bun can be worn low, high, messy or neat, dependent on your preference.     The mighty Chignon Chignons come in many varieties. It’s like a distant cousin of the more popular bun. In fact, the word ‘Chignon’ is a fancy way of saying ‘bun’ in French. You need to have an army of bobby pins to pull off this look, but with a professional hairstylist it is achievable! Chignons are usually worn for formal nights and no surprise here – weddings! You can’t go wrong with this look.       French braid Amp up the romance with a French braid. We are also obsessed with the French after all they are known for their culture of...
